I've been in the insurance business for over 29 years now. Good luck to you. It's not easy.

If you're sitting around waiting for the phones to ring quit now. The best thing you can do is put in some "sweat equity". Get on the phone and call, call, call. Telemarketing has a bad reputation now but it works better then anything else. Don't be afraid to put in some long hours.

Go to your local library and pull up a copy of the commercial record and find out who's moved into your area and call them.

Finally, get a copy of the book "Power Position Your Agency" by Troy Korsgaden. It's well worth reading

I confess I am not in insurance. But for most people, networking is the best way to promote. Start with the people you know and already have an established relationship with. Anyone that you have ever worked with, went to school with, family, acquaintances, friends, people who provide you services(mailman, plumber, etc). Buenas Suerte!

Make a list of the people that you know. Send a letter or call and let them know what you are doing and ask for their help. You can joing the chamber of commerce in your area or you can visit networking groups like Business Networking International. www.bni.com You can also purchase leads online with several different online leads sources.

Every customer that you bring in make sure to cross-sell. If you write someone a homeowners policy, talk to them about auto insurance or life insurance. Ask what kind of work they do. If they are sell employed they need all kinds of insurance and self employed retirement accounts.
